As we grow up, our muscles and bones grow too. The skeleton serves as the framework of the human body and it indicates the growth of a person as far as size and height is concerned. This framework is actually movable because they have hinges and joints called the ligaments while muscles control them to make them movable. Now, these muscles can be flexed which can push the bones to make them more movable. So if you think you are already beyond the puberty age and you think your bones stop growing and growth hormone secretion becomes lesser, then your posture can be the key to still grow taller at your age.
Let’s go back to the ligaments and muscles which hold and control the bones of our body. People who are not usually doing work or exercises may develop a poor posture especially when they slouch. Slouching and poor posture may be caused by imbalanced muscles and shrinking ligaments inside the spinal column. Carrying very heavy objects using your back and shoulders without exercise may also cause poor development of the spinal column wherein in-vertebral discs are located. Students who carry backpacks with heavy books everyday may end up having a poor posture while they grow up. Developing the habit of having good posture by doing exercises can fix the issue.
Maintaining good posture can become a habit. It can start with daily activities such as walking and standing straight, sitting straight in front of a computer, or simply by properly sitting inside the classroom. This can be at first difficult to do with people who already developed a bad posture but with daily practice, they can become used to it. Just always remember that a good posture can give certain benefits such as strong spine, better confidence, and good impression from other people we encounter.
In contrast, poor posture may lead to certain disasters like height decrease and bad physique. It can also be the cause or indication of worse ailments such as breaking of bones or lowered spinal bone density. Aside from that, the common consequences of having a poor posture are bad impression from people which can somehow affect confidence levels.
Here are the most common habits or ailments that is related to a bad posture or a shorter height:
- Being overweight, or the failure to stop the belly from getting big, can cause problems in the spines which can affect the posture. When the fat in the belly becomes large or when the person becomes overweight, the pelvis will be pulled forward because of the fat weight and this will give a poor posture. This condition is usually referred to as “tilted pelvis”.
- The way that our legs are developed will not only affect their appearance but also the height. This is true with two leg conditions called the knock-knees (legs angled almost pointing at each other) or bow-legs (legs angles away from each other). Walking from either of the two angled leg conditions will affect the weight of the person which can affect the posture.
- Rounded shoulders can be another culprit to a shorter height. This abnormality is actually on the spines which make the shoulder to protrude forward. This will make the person to appear like a hunched back.
Joint and foot pain may also become a problem when the skeletal system is not aligned properly. This means that the weight of the body is not properly distributed which will cause pressure to places where it should not be.
Some of the information can be alarming but you don’t have to be afraid because exercises, good food, and practicing the habit of having a good posture can somehow fix the problem and even increase height.
