The Kyphosis Treatment: What You and Your Doctor Can Do

by Khaleel Jones on April 11, 2012

If you have seen a camel, you will see that the humps are there but compared to a person with a hump, camel’s is a normal thing. A person with a hunch can become unattractive and that person can have a hard time trying to make it straight simply because he or she lacks the knowledge of posture exercises.

Having a slight hunch at the back can be a posture problem called kyphosis. Kyphosis can be treated and corrected by regular posture exercises. So if you don’t want to be called a camel then you have to learn about how you can improve your posture and eliminate kyphosis.

Kyphosis Defined

Kyphosis is simply the deformation of the upper back because of spine curving. The curving of the spine is due to bad habits of slouching or due to practice of incorrect posture.

Kyphosis can definitely decrease someone’s height because of the curve. If this condition is corrected by straightening the spine, a person can add some inches to his or her height. A person can have different severity of kyphosis and they can even be like the “hunchback of Notre Dame.” But it can be corrected through posture exercises if it can be seen early.

How to Avoid Postural Kyphosis

Kyphosis due to bad posture habits or postural kyphosis can be avoided and can be corrected. If you have seen camels and you do not want to like them then this is the time that you improve your posture before it gets even worse. If you are a growing teen and you think you have no kyphosis, maintain a good posture and keep on exercising to prevent the development of kyphosis.

There are so many instances that a person can unconsciously develop postural kyphosis. One is by not sitting erectly at a chair. When you are at work for example, you tend to sit with your tailbone away from the chair and this leads to slouching which is a bad sitting habit. When you do this over and over again, you will unknowingly develop a hump in your back. Staring at the computer with too forward head will not only damage your eyes, but also your spine. This will create a forward head which is also a cause of kyphosis. Remember to always maintain a good sitting postion whether you are in the office or watching TV.

Kyphosis Exercises for Better Posture

For the treatment of kyphosis, you have to understand that you really need to spend some time to correct it. So the key here is to enjoy the kyphosis exercises that you will do daily. Below are two examples of the routines that you can start now.

The Scapula Squeeze

The shoulder blades also called as “scapula” is the body in this exercises. To do this, squeeze your scapula by pulling your shoulders backwards. This will strengthen your upper back muscles which will correctly align your spine.

The Neck Exercise

With a forward head, you have to train your neck to be aligned with your body. In this condition, the spine is more bent in the neck area and so we have to correct it with this neck kyphosis exercise. In order to do this, you have to:

1. Bring your neck carefully down to your chest. Next, slowly bring it up towards the ceiling.

2. Now while facing front, slowly turn your neck to either right or left side and then hold it on that position in the side for seconds. Then slowly turn your neck back to the front. Do it on the opposite side.

3. Bring your ear down towards your shoulder either left or right. Then go back to the front head position again. Do the opposite.

Now that you know some of the exercises to prevent and treat kyphosis, you can start to make them a daily habit.
